As a reminder of our fast tomorrow, I want to share more instructions that Paul is teaching Timothy in our ongoing study on Tuesday nights. Let’s remember that Paul is teaching Timothy how to manage an unruly church in Ephesus. In chapter 5 of 1st Timothy, he is taught how to treat Church members. Then in 6, he begins to show him the error of greed and its consequences as well as the better way. Paul warns that to teach otherwise is in agreement with that which produces; disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. And he warns us to withdraw ourselves from such as these.
Paul says that those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. He goes on to Timothy and us, but you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. (NKJV)
Does any of this sound familiar? As I pray my way through my morning paper I am vividly reminded. The Holy Spirit has instructed me to back off politics and focus on the things listed above which are the fruits of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5 where we are instructed to crucify the flesh with its passions and desires and walk in the Spirit. I know that most of you know all of his but I must have needed a reminder, and maybe some of you do also.
There is certainly no dearth of things to pray for tomorrow. Let us pray without ceasing.
LIFE does not meet tonight, we will gather in Agape Chapel next Tuesday for our continued instruction from Paul.
