Prayer

In preparation for fasting and praying together tomorrow, I read in 1 Corinthians 12: 12-26 about unity in the body.  Paul very cleverly uses the body parts to point out schisms in the body of Christ.  Let me paraphrase here in my words.  If a Catholic should say because I am not an  Episcopalian, I am not of the body?  And if the Baptist should say, because I am not a Presbyterian, I am not of the body?  If the whole body were a Baptist where would be the Methodist?

I always took this passage to be talking about one congregation but recently I have been reading about our many many denominations and their differences.  I think Jesus taught that we are called into one body…the body of Christ…The Bride, preparing for His return.  Paul says in this passage, there should be no schisms (splits) in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another.

I’d like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I’d like to hold it in my arms
And keep it company.

As we fast and pray together tomorrow, let’s focus on the things all denominations believe and see if we can make a difference by reaching out in love and the Spirit of the original intent for the “Body of Christ”.
